The company became a major player in the Hollywood film industry, making movies such as "The Godfather", "Casablanca", and "A Hard Day's Night". Paramount was also one of the earliest studios to release films on video. In 1974, the studio merged with Viacom, forming Paramount Communications. In 1995, Paramount Pictures Corporation was spun off from Viacom and is now an independentlyowned subsidiary of Time Warner Entertainment Inc., which manages its films through its Turner Entertainment divisions. The history of Paramount can be traced back to 1915 when two entrepreneurs named Harry Cohn and Sam Cohn founded a motion picture company in Hollywood called Goldwyn Pictures. The brothers had been inspired to start a movie company after seeing how successful it had been for their father, Louis Goldwyn, who ran a theater chain in New York City. Together, they purchased the rights to make films from various independent filmmakers and began production on several short films before starting production on their first feature-length film, "The Adventures of Don Juan". Goldwyn Productions continued to produce successful films until 1928 when Harry Cohn decided that he wanted more control over his product. He sold his share in the company to his brother Sam for $25 million dollars. This move set the stage for what would become Paramount Pictures Corporation. In 1932, Paramount produced its first sound film with pictures using Vitaphone technology. Two years later they produced their first all-color feature film with synchronized sound using 35mm photosensitive equipment. By 1936, Paramount had released over 100 features including some of the most famous titles such as "Casablanca" and "A Hard Day's Night". In 1938 they released their biggest hit yet with " Gone With The Wind ". That same year they made their first foray into television with the series " Rawhide ". From then on they would become one of Hollywood's leading producers and continue producing high-quality entertainment until 1994 when they merged with Viacom (owner of Universal Studios) creating Paramount Communications Limited Partnership (PCLP). This merger created a monopoly on many aspects of American cinema which allowed them to keep prices low while maintaining high quality standards across all their productions; this strategy helped them remain competitive against other studios throughout much of the 1990s while still being able to produce high quality movies without breaking stride into new markets like home media or digital distribution platforms like iTunes or YouTube (*see below).
