Paradise is a city in and the county seat of Inyo County, California, United States. The population was 921 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert, about 30 miles (48 km) east of downtown Los Angeles and 20 miles (32 km) north-west of Phoenix. The first Europeans to visit what is now Paradise were traders from Spain in 1819. The town was founded by James Waddell on November 10, 1836 as part of a survey for Rancho San Bernardino de la Gomera grant that also included present-day Yucca Valley and parts of today's Kern County. The town was named after an angel who had appeared to Spanish missionary Father José Francisco Garces near Yucca Valley in 1825. In 1860, Gold Rush prospectors discovered gold in what is now Paradise Valley and began building cabins there; within a few years over 100 miners were operating here. By 1870, most of the miners had left for other strikes but a few men remained to drill new mines and process gold dredged from nearby rivers. By 1876, all but two men working at Chanute Mines had gone out West with rich gold discoveries in California; paradise lay abandoned until 1893 when it was reactivated as part of the California Gold Rush Suburban Development Program propaganda campaign by then‑Governor William Hennepin as a way to bring more people into central California during the briefgolden age of mining towns around Sacramento and Yuba City before Centralwestern Railroad construction cut off access to those places in 1903. In 1911–12 Jerald Crayton built one of the largest plants operated by Southern Pacific Railway west of Omaha - called "Craytonville" - just south of where current day Interstate 5 intersects I-10 outside town limits; this plant produced passenger cars for Eastern Union Railway which served Chicago through Southern Pacific mainline tracks running east out Of Town via I‑5 into Reno Canyon well beyond that city Limits then continued across I‑5 into Chico State University land northeast past Davis Lake before terminating at Woodland Hills Racetrack northwest past Lone Pine
