Paradise, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of San Bernardino County and the largest city in the county by area. The region now known as Paradise Valley was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. A post office called "Pleasant" was established at what is now known as Eastridge Avenue in 1876, and remained in operation until 1911. In 1907, a group of investors named Harmon bought land near present-day Park City and developed it into a town called Harmonville. They named their town after Moses Harmon, one of their owners. In 1912, two brothers named John Pogue purchased land east of Harmonville and began to settle it onto which they erected a log cabin and name it "Paradise." The community grew rapidly with people coming from all over Southern California to find enjoy its serene surroundings. By 1916, Paradise had become an incorporated municipality with a population of 10 residents. On December 17, 1922, Pacific Gas and Electric Company opened the first retail electric company store in Southern California when it leased space from Harmons for $5 per month on North Broadway Street in Paradise Valley. This location became home to PG&E's original customer service center for Comcast customers who were still using switchboard operators during those early days of telephone service throughout much of America

In 1867, the California Gold Rush began in earnest and within a few years, many men and women had discovered new goldfields in what is now known as California. By 1872, over 50,000 people were living in the area around this small town called Paradise. The first permanent settler in present-day Paradise was John C. Fremont who arrived with his family in 1851. The town grew rapidly due to the influx of miners and their families who often supplemented their income by working on nearby ranches or farms. By 1886, when the railroad reached Paradise from Stockton, it became an important stop for travelers heading westward across the state line. As a result, business flourished and Paradise became one of the most prosperous small towns in California. But even during times of prosperity there were occasional problems that led to tension between settlers and Indians. For example, when soldiers burned down a hut occupied by Native Americans in 1876 they responded with violence which ultimately led to large amounts of local gold being taken from these people without their permission or consent. Despite these challenges though, many individuals still believed that paradise was an ideal place to live because of its warm climate and level ground which made farming easy and allowed for easy access to water supplies. In addition, residents enjoyed close proximity to other settlements such as San Francisco Bay and Sacramento City proper where they could purchase goods or services unavailable near them elsewhere. This behavior continued into the 20th century as more people moved into town while less land was available to develop so there remained a strong economy based on manufacturing (farming declined after World War II), retail trade (largely handled by independent businesses) and social activities (such as summer recreation).
The first permanent European settlement in California was on the Rancho de las Vegas, established by Manuel Nieto in 1769. The next year, Spanish Franciscans founded Mission San Francisco de Asís. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain and set up its own government, which granted Californios their own land rights. In 1848, the United States acquired control of California from Mexico and began to expand into the area. The population of California reached over 20 million by 1850, and by 1870 it had grown to more than 40 million people. In 1853–54, a group of Mormon settlers arrived in California from Utah; they founded the city of Salt Lake City. However, the Mormons were forced out of California in 1855 and replaced with Mexicans as the dominant group in that state. The Mexican-American War (1846-1850) ended with Mexican victory but didn’t result in any new land grants to Californians. In 1858–59, American soldiers burned down much of what is now downtown Los Angeles during a rebellion against Mexican rule; this event is also known as the March on Los Angeles.
