Paradise, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 3,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield-Los Angeles-Hollywood metropolitan area. Paradise was founded in 1876 by Captain John Sutter and his wife Eliza Sutter as a wagon depot on the Chico River. The name comes from Spanish paraje meaning "a place where one can go to rest." The first post office in Paradise opened in 1877. The town became incorporated on February 14, 1879. In 1923, it became an unincorporated community within Kern County. On January 1, 1928, the community changed its name to Paradise after being offered a gift of 2 acres (0 km2) of land at the edge of Los Olivos Valley for $5 per capita from Averill Harriman and his brother Cyrus Harding Harriman.
The first permanent American settlement in what is now California was made at Yountville, about 120 miles (185 km) west of Sacramento, in 1849. The site was chosen because it lay on the then-new route of the Central Pacific Railway. In 1863, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, and quickly became a boomtown. Gold mining continued until 1868, when production peaked and prices began to fall due to overproduction. Many miners moved away from California during this period; some settled in Nevada or Oregon. In 1869, an act of Congress created Rancho Rincon de los Padres—now part of San Bernardino County—in present-day Riverside County for the purpose of allowing white men to settle there without Native American consent. This event marked the beginning of Anglo colonization in California.
