Paradise, California is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 8,676 at the 2010 census. It lies on the southern edge of Butte Valley and is south of Bakersfield. The name comes from the Spanish word "paradise" meaning "Second Paradise." The area that would become Paradise was first populated by Mono people in about 1800. A post office called Paradise was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1909, an ad for land to be used as a military airbase said: "If you want to see paradise look no further than this desert". In 1916, the US Army built an airstrip near present-day Paradise for use by bomber planes during World War I. In 1923, developer Domingo Reyes set out to build what he thought were two new cities – one north of Los Angeles and another east of downtown Los Angeles. He named his first city Paradiso after the Spanish word for "Second Eden". However, when reality set in and development proceeded slowly or not at all within Reyes' initial plans (due largely to opposition from then-Mayor Edward J. Davis), four other towns quickly grew up around him – Rancho Mirage (west of town), Cathedral City (southwest of town), Downey (northwest of town) and Hawthorne (just east of downtown). By 1930, when Reyes finally completed his original Downtown Los Angeles–Paradiso Plan with help from banker Harry Chandler and movie mogul William Randolph Hearst – only three towns had been developed: Rancho Mirage, Cathedral City and Downey Village; both Rancho Mirage and Cathedral City had lost their residents core populations due to commuting distance or industry growth elsewhere within those communities; while Hawthorne had become little more than a bedroom community detached from downtown LA otherwise known as Hollywood Hills without any significant commercial activity or cultural significance beyond itsresidential tenants who conducted agricultural operations primarily outside their homes along Withnut Avenue corridor which runs between Hawthorne Road/Hawthorne Place Boulevardand Lankershim Boulevard/Lankershim Place Boulevard

However, over time Paradise Valley turned into one of the most poverty-ridden areas in California. People living there couldn’t even afford food or water supplies let alone buy property outside of the town limits.
On October 9, 1879, the town of Paradise was founded on land that had been a part of the Rancho de las Pulgas Mexican grant. The town was named for the biblical Garden of Eden. In 1906, Paradise became a city and in 1928 it became a state capital.
