In 1876, American entrepreneur and naturalist George C. Smith founded the first binocular company in Los Angeles. At that time, binoculars were only used for surveying or mapping purposes. The Ortelius Company was founded in 1888 by Dutch scientist Johan Ortelius as a subsidiary of Kapp & Co., Ltd. In 1901, Kapp & Co., Ltd merged with Philips Semiconductors to form Philips Electronics Corporation. The Carta-Scope became one of the most popular types of binoculars ever made and remains popular to this day. With its wide field of vision and long focal length, it allowed users to see more details than ever before. Over time, other manufacturers joined Philips Electronics Corporation including GE Aviation (1948), Raytheon (1951), Hughes Aircraft (1954), Zenith Television Incorporated (1964) and Sylvania Electric Products Incorporated (1967). By the early 1990s, all major manufacturers had discontinued production of optics products worldwide save for a few specialist companies such as Leitz Limited which still produces Edmund Optics products today under their subsidiaries Leitz Optical Industries Pty Limited and Loxley Optronics Pty Ltd
