The Palos Verdes Estates area of Los Angeles County was first inhabited by the Tongva people. They were located on the west coast of Peninsula California, about twenty miles south of downtown LA. The Tongva lived in villages near what is now Downtown LA and had a complex system of governance, including an elected village council. In 1846, Spanish soldiers under General José Joaquin Murrieta discovered fruit trees in the area and began to grow them, which led to the town being named Palos Verdes in 1850. In 1863, ownership of the land passed from Spain to Mexico after California became part of America. Mexican troops abandoned their post at Rancho Santa Margarita near La Jolla in 1876 and never returned, leaving Palos Verdes Estates unoccupied for many years. In 1899, two brothers founded The Paramount Studios on PALO VERDES ESTATES Boulevard in Hollywood with backing from William Randolph Hearst. This started what would become one of Hollywood's most successful movie companies. With more than 120 films made here over fifty years, Paramount Pictures was one of Hollywood's most iconic names and helped create a new American industry. However, during World War II much of PALO VERDES ESTATE was destroyed by bombardment by US bombers; as a result only a small section remain today within walking distance (and still largely undeveloped) of downtown LA proper. As this remnant becomes increasingly populated with new homeowners who have reclaimed old homes that had been used as bombing targets or storage depots during wartime bombings-much like any other city-the prices for these homes continue to escalate rapidly due to its considerable history and allure as a former military target zone
