Palos Verdes Estates is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 113,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles–Long Beach metropolitan area. The Palos Verdes Estates CDP includes the towns of La Habra Heights, Palos Verdes Hills, and Pasadena and portions of Playa del Rey and Cerritos. The towns are adjacent to each other on two sides of a large peninsula that forms the eastern edge of LA's city limits. According to the United States Census Bureau, Palos Verdes Estates has a total area of , all within LA's city limits. As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 100,671 people, 43,521 households, and 28,971 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,869/km² (10,612/mi²). There were 47,[4]491 housing units at an average density of 1,515/km² (3,854/mi²). The racial makeupof the CDP was 83% White European American; 7% African American; 2% Native American; 5% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 2% from other races; and 3% from two or more races. The Palos Verdes Estates area in Southern California is one of the most affluent and well-to-do municipalities in the United States. The community was founded in 1887 by a group of wealthy Californian investors, led by banker George H. Smith. The community quickly became known for its prestigious schools and its exclusive social circles, which included such luminaries as Hollywood stars Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) founder Adolph Zukor and financier Jacob Schiff. In 1922, the citizens of Palos Verdes Estates voted to become an autonomous city under the leadership of Mayor Harry Bridges. In 1951, Mayor Milton J. Levy proposed annexing neighboring La Habra Heights into Palos Verdes Estates so that it could be annexed into Los Angeles County; but this proposal was met with resistance from some residents who felt their neighborhood had always been separate and distinct from LA County’s more populous areas. After several years of discussion, on February 14, 1957, City Council passed an ordinance granting city status to Palos Verdes Estates. The new municipality experienced rapid growth during the 1960s and 1970s due to its strong economy and its location within walking distance of many major metropolitan areas in Southern California. By 1997, Palos Verdes Estates had reached population totals similar to those seen in 1920 when the first settlers arrived: nearly 20,000 people living in over 100 neighborhoods stretching from Harbor Isle Boulevard north to Ocean Drive. Today, Palos Verds Estate's vibrancy is intact as a result of its rich history and vibrant cultural institutions; while still enjoying access to world class amenities enjoyed by other cities across America such as Beverly Hills (BH), Los Angeles (LA), Manhattan Beach (MB), San Francisco (SF), Miami (FL) – all within walking distance!
In 1848, the area was part of Mexico and was not annexed by the United States until 1912. The Palos Verdes Estates neighborhood on the southern edge of Los Angeles County was founded in 1868 and became a distinct community with its own political structure, schools, and churches.
