Today, Palos Verdes Estates has a population of over 20,000 residents and continues to grow each year because of its many features: its beautiful scenery,its strong economy,and its large number of professional businesses.

Airlines serve both La Cañada Flintridge Airport (LAT) in southern Pasadena suburbs east of town – about 10 miles from downtown – and LAX Terminal 2 near Channel 9 television station in Hollywood – about 25 miles from downtown – both international airports serving Los Angeles County without having their own terminals or customs areas. There are also express bus service between LAP airport and downtown LA daily. Amtrak operates three trains per day carrying passengers between Santa Monica Boulevard south of UCLA's campus on Wilshire Boulevard to West Hollywood Junction then north along Ventura Boulevard into Downtown Los Angeles where passengers can connect with other Amtrak services or take a taxi or Uber ride back home
The Palos Verdes Estates, California area was first populated by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The first known European to visit this area was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo, who explored and charted what is now Southern California in 1542. In 1769, Spanish missions were founded in the area, including Mission San José de la Laguna on the Palos Verdes Peninsula. The mission was later renamed after King Carlos III of Spain. In 1821, California became part of Mexico following its independence from Spain. However, Mexican rule did not last long and American settlers began arriving in large numbers in 1846. By 1850, about 10% of Los Angeles County was composed of agricultural land and palo verde timberland accounted for only 1%. By 1860, more than 60% of allLos Angeles County residents were born within its borders. A number of successful entrepreneurs created new businesses around this time: Jameson Distillery opened in1851; Wells Fargo & Co., a banking firm that became one of America's largest banks, opened a branch near downtown Los Angeles in 1852; John Atherton started an unsuccessful sugar cane plantation near present-day Monrovia; and Captain John Sutter established his Rancho Santa Anita on what is now Ventura County in 1859. Large areas east of Pasadena were annexed by Pasadena during the 1960s as part of then-Governor George Cisneros' attempt to create a metropolitan area around Los Angeles County with diverse economic powers beyond its central city boundaries (the current day LAX airport lies just outside Downtown Pasadena). However much larger than today's Riverside counties Riverside had been until then primarily agricultural with few industrial or commercial developments taking place until after World War II when heavy defense spending led to rapid growth both inside and outside Scripps Institution Of Oceanography which went from 2 scientists at beginning to over 100 scientists by endowment alone
