In 1893, William Randolph Hearst acquired control of the Republic Corporation—a business enterprise controlled by Mexican magnate Francisco Sánchez Underwood—and began Stadium Playground development in what is now Crystal City Cemetery (later renamed Hollywood Memorial Cemetery). Hearst's venture was successful enough that he sold Stadium Playground to his longtime friend James Wickersham in 1897 for $5 million ($140 million in current currency). This acquisition marked an important turning point in American movie production; prior to Hearst's purchase, movies were typically made at studios across New York City orPhiladelphia.
