In 1969, PALO VERDES ESTATE became a city when it joined San Francisco County. At that time, all land within city limits belonged to San Francisco County while buildings within city boundaries were owned by various private individuals or organizations such as City Hall and Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E). Today, most of the annexed areas of PALO VERDES ESTATES are located within City Limits Municipality which is also home to most of the public services needed by its citizens including police department, library, water system and fire Department. The exceptions are a small portion of eastern Palo Alto which is located inside City Limits Municipality but belongs entirely to University Avenue neighborhood which has been part of PALO VERDE ESTATES since 1922. The Palos Verdes Estates, California area is located in the northwestern corner of Los Angeles County. As of 2010, its population was 147,544 people. The Palos Verdes Estates are a census-designated area and have been organized into several villages since 1959. The first human settlement in the present-day Palos Verdes Estates region was founded by Captain John Pritchard and his men on August 4, 1769, while they were exploring what is now downtown Los Angeles. Captain Pritchard's party landed on what is now Signal Hill and built a small cabin there to wait out the storm that would sweep across the region that day. On December 1st of that year, Captain Pritchard's group came across an Indian village numbering 30 to 40 people who had fled from another group of Indians who had killed their families. After trading goods with the Indians and learning about their culture and way of life, Captains Pritchard and Watts took some of their women and children back with them to Fort La Brea as part of a gift for Governor Manuel Micheltorena. In 1802 Antonio López gave land in what is now Villa Park to José Miguel Carrera for his daughter María Luisa Carrera Guerra; she later married José Figueroa y Costilla (1786-1874), who was also given land in Villa Park by Antonio Lopez. In 1814 Juan Bautista de Anza arrived at Angelus Heights on November 12th with 21 other soldiers under General Antonio Lopez y Costilla during Mission San Gabriel Arcángel's campaign against duties owed by Mexican Governor Alvaro Obregon along Santa Anita River Valley route eastward from Los Angeles proper. A few years later Father Francisco Javier Claret founded Mission San José Junípero Serra Chapel on Rancho Rincon del Rey which became known as Mission Dolores after its first priest Fray Joaquín De la Cruz arrived in 1792 following Mexico's victory over Spain at Bunker Hill near Monterey Peninsula then known as Las Alturas de Nuestra Señora del Rosario or Nuestra Señora del Carmen Church; he served here until 1810 when he returned to Mexico City due to health reasons then relocated permanently to this mission parish which eventually grew into one of Southern California’s largest Catholic missions With 2 priests serving simultaneously each from 1800 through 1840 it boasted 350 baptized members plus numerous converts amongst Soldiers/ Sailors/ Marines & others stationed there during various wars including Mexican War (1821-24) & American Occupation 1861-68

The measure also authorized annexation by neighboring cities including West Hollywood and Beverly Hills if necessary for park district expansion or improvement projects within those cities or for maintaining open space within those cities' borders. Since 1959, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has chaired the Parks & Recreation Commission which provides leadership on parks issues through policymaking and management; commission members include Mayor Villaraigosa's wife Christine Quinn (former Deputy mayor), Phil Angelides (D-Los Angeles), Jane Kim (D-Chicago), Ricardo Lara (D-Los Angeles County), Edwin Lee (D-New York City) and Rafael Ruiz (D-LA). In 2013 Moreno became chairwoman after her husband Jerry earned a seat on the commission during redistricting following the passage of Proposition 13
The Palos Verdes Estates area was originally a part of Rancho San Vicente. The land in the area was purchased by José Antonio Marquez from Manuel Nieto in 1848. In 1851, Marquez divided his property into two tracts - one for himself and the other for his wife, Catarina García. Catarina García sold her half of the tract to José Gabriel Sánchez in 1861. In 1876, Santiago Ramirez bought the remaining half of the Garcia tract from José Gabriel Sánchez. He organized what is now known as "La Sociedad de Agricultores de Palos Verdes" (the Association of Agriculturalists of Palos Verdes). In 1902, La Sociedad de Agricultores de Palos Verdes merged with "La Asociación Rural del Valle", another agricultural society. That same year, Santiago Ramirez donated 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land to be used as a playground for Children's Hospital on behalf of Dr. John Leland Holmes Jr., executive director at that time. At first there were just a few swings and some sandboxes but soon enough Playland became an important part of history and culture in the area.
