The first Targets were located on the original golf course and continue to be a popular attraction for locals and visitors alike. Today, there are several different Targets located around town, as well as a few Targets scattered throughout other areas of the county. One of the earliest Gun Targets was established on what is now the corner of Ocean Blvd. and Sanguine Rd. This facility was known as “The Range” and was used by both local residents and visiting dignitaries. It is believed that this particular Target originally consisted of just two metal posts with a target hanging from one end and ammunition stored underneath the other. Needless to say, this particular Gun Target was quite an attraction for those who wanted to experience real-life NRA training at its highest level! Over time, additional Targets were established in various locations within Palos Verdes Estates including but not limited to: The Park at Bird Island; The Reserve at White Sands Beach; The Vineyards; Harbour Cove Marina; palm trees near Saratoga Lake; along Racetrack Road between Ventura Boulevard and Indian Wells Drive; as well as close by schools like Deer Valley Elementary School, Chaparral High School & Westlake Village Middle School - all of which enjoyed plenty of visitors each year! In addition to these public places, private individuals also established their own Targets throughout town – some lasting up to 15 years! These ranges typically consisted of just four or five metal posts with a target hanging from one end while rounds were stored beneath the other. Clearly, these Gun Targets had an enormous impact on aspects such as rifle practice & competition among area residents! The Palos Verdes Estates community of more than 60,000 people was founded on a small tract of land in 1849. The original owner, Don Pedro de la Cueva, sold the area to James P. Morton for $1,500. The first post office and school were organized in 1850. In 1864, the town became an incorporated municipality with a population of about 3500. A year later, the first hotel opened in the community. In 1871, a railroad was built through the community and it began to grow rapidly as businesses came and went. By 1899, there were over 50 businesses in the town. In 1907-08, construction began on what is now City Hall and it was completed in 1909. In 1916-17, World War I interrupted development in Palos Verdes Estates; however, by 1919 most of the buildings had been replaced with new ones and much of the original infrastructure had been rebuilt or improved. during World War II many residents chose Notch Valley as their home because of its better air quality for munitions production; however not all properties within Notch Valley were war safe so some residents migrated back into Palos Verdes Estates after 1945 when war ended
