The town started to form in the early 1800s, when people began arriving to work in the fruit orchards around what is now known as Spring Valley. By 1851, there were over 100 residents living in Palos Verdes Estates. In 1871, the last Mexican resident died in Palos Verdes Estates and all U.S.-owned land within its boundaries became American property. After World War II, many Japanese Americans lived here until they were expelled in 1942 during the Japanese concentration camps at Lompoc and Santa Anita Park. Today, much of what once made up Palos Verdes Estates is still rural with many farms and small towns surrounding it
The Palos Verdes Estates area was first settled by Spanish colonists in 1776. The first post office in the area was established in 1837, and the first store opened in 1841. In 1886, the town of Palos Verdes Springs was founded on the south end of present-day Palos Verdes Estates. The towns were combined into a single municipality in 1912. In 1951, the municipalities were again separated, and Palos Verdes Estates became an independent city.
