It is located on the Palos Verdes Peninsula and is part of the Greater Los Angeles area. The Palos Verdes Peninsula was first settled by Californio Indians in 1769. The first European to visit what is now Palos Verdes Estates was José Sepulveda, who named it after his home province of Barcelona, Spain. A small rancho was established by Juan Jose de la Salle near present-day Pacific Coast Highway 1 in 1824. In 1853–54, American Harrison Gray Otis sold lots and built some houses on the peninsula for $2 each and called them "Harrison's Haven". In 1906 Supervisor George Bird Griggs organized a citizens' committee to purchase land for a new city hall; this committee developed plans for the current civic center which were adopted as a city ordinance on October 15, 1912. On May 12, 1915 Mayor James Fenton dedicated the new Civic Center with an address that included these words: "This site has been chosen because it offers excellent prospects for growth...It will be one of great public buildings in Southern California." On November 3rd 1916 World War I veteran Johnnie Cochran (USN) became mayoralty candidate when incumbent Tom Bradley refused to run after serving three terms as vice mayor under Griggs. Cochran won with 53% of the vote against 25% given to Harry Bridges (D). He served four terms until he resigned due to health problems on January 6th 1932 following an election victory over Harry Bridges with 59%. He had been cancerous since 1928 and lost most of his hair during treatment at UCLA Medical School but continued to campaign until his death at age 80 years old on December 10th 1932 just nine days before Christmas Eve celebrations began in honor of him being buried at Valley Glen Cemetery next door where he had posthumously earned many awards including an honorary doctorate from UCLA School of Medicine. The Palos Verdes Estates area was settled by the Acapulco people, who arrived in 1769. The rancho was granted to José Figueroa in 1836. In 1871, Royer and John Temple bought the Rancho San Rafael from José María Sánchez. TheTemple family homesteaded there until 1923 when they sold it to Edwin Ladd and his wife Alma. They developed it into a profitable citrus empire that continue to this day.
