In 1870, entrepreneur Alonzo Mourning built him his first house on what is now Girard Street. By 1880, Mourning had founded two other companies: one involved in cotton production and another in shipping goods from Northern California inland to Southern California. In 1892, he married Rachelle Parsons Woodworth (1860-1948), who would later become one of America's most famous socialites. Mourning's company became known for producing high-quality wallpaper and flooring products that were exported around the world. Over time, Mourning's company became one of America's largest furniture manufacturers and also produced radios, televisions, autos, casinos and other industrial items during the 1920s and 1930s . During World War II, Palos Verdes Estates became an important manufacturing center for munitions because it had access to adequate materials supplies near Los Angeles County . At war’s end both Menlo Park (to the south) and Palo Alto (to the north) lost significant portions of their populations due to either displacement or relocation within Greater Los Angeles ." These changes meant that although many people still lived close by throughout these years there was little interaction between those living in town versus those living outside town - this changed abruptly with suburban development following World War II . After World War II ended came new technology with associated jobs such as computer programming , artificial intelligence , medical imaging etc., all of which created waves of migration into inner cities across North America during this period

The settlement became a town in 1912 and then a city in 1923 after it was annexed by Los Angeles. In 1951, Palos Verdes Estates became part of the newly formed Unified School District #1 which remains today one of Southern California's largest school districts. Today, Palos Verdes Estates is home to over 120 businesses which include many large chain stores such as Sears and JCPenney as well as smaller businesses such as ABC grocery store and La Cantera Golf Course. It also has several high-end restaurants including Benaroya Hall (formerly known as Regal Cinemas), L’Atelier restaurant, TGI Fridays restaurant, Staple & Fancy bookstore/cafeteria/, Headlands Casino Resort - home to several table games - and Villanova University's business school which offers courses for entrepreneurs and managers alike
The Palos Verdes Estates area was first settled in 1847 by John C. Frémont and his brother, Kit Carson. The land was donated by Governor Pio Pico to the United States government in 1853 as part of Rancho San Vicente de la Laguna. In 1862, the freebooter Jesse James robbed a stagecoach near Palm Springs, California; he was captured and executed nearby on October 16, 1876. This event is commonly referred to as the "Palos Verdes Massacre." The post office at Palm Springs opened on January 10, 1897. The name change from Rancho San Vicente de la Laguna to Palos Verdes Estates occurred on February 17, 1898. On May 1, 1912, the town acquired title to 9 miles (14 kilometers) of beachfront property extending from Seal Beach eastward to Pacific Boulevard. The City of Los Angeles annexed portions of Palos Verdes Estates on November 15, 1932. On December 14th 1938 during World War II Japanese forces attacked Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton; 21 Marines were killed and over 100 injured when an I-15 bomber crashed into the base early that morning while refueling Inland Seaplanes operated by Marine Air Group 2 (MAG-2). The attack is known as "the Battle of Belle Isle" or "Pendleton Night".
