Palos Verdes Estates, California is a census-designated place (CDP) in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 83,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and has asurface area of 805.2 square miles. The Palos Verdes Estates CDP covers most of the eastern edge of Pasadena City Hall Park and is bordered by Griffith Park to the south, Montrose Canyon to the east, La Brea Avenue to the northwest and Interstate 5 to the north. It was named for Spanish governor Manuel Antonio Palou de la Vega y Guerrero who arrived in 1777 during Napoleonic Wars and claimed Rancho Palos Verdes as part of his holdings in Alta California. In 1866 Congress passed an act giving all unincorporated areas located on or within 1 mile (2 km) of any U.S.[1] military installation within 10 miles (16 km) of San Francisco Bay and including parts of Orange County were given city status. On July 15, 1870, Pasadena became an incorporated city with a population over 10,000 inhabitants[2][3] which included much of what is now Palos Verdes Estates CDP.[4][5] The first post office in this area opened in 1879 under name "Pasadena".[6] On December 20th 1907 it changed its name to "Los Angeles". The Palos Verdes Estates community of approximately 5,000 residents was founded in 1887 by Judge George C. Smith and his wife, Mrs. Hiram Bingham. The area now includes the communities of Bel Air, Brentwood, Culver City, Hermosa Beach, and West Hills. The mainstay of the community's economy until the 1950s was agriculture; throughout that time period, Palos Verdes Estates saw a strong commercial presence with an array of businesses including grocery stores, banks, clothing stores, toy manufacturers and department stores. In recent years however, the town's economy has diversified with a focus on art and culture as well as health care and education institutions. The first settlers to live in Palos Verdes Estates were farmers who came from upstate New York. By 1887 there were about twenty-five families living in what is now Palos Verdes Estates. In 1905 the city of Los Angeles annexed part of what is now Woodland Hills to form a new municipality called South Pasadena which contained much of what is now Palm Desert. Judge Smith decided to move his family from their home in East Elmhurst to South Pasadena so they could be closer to their friends and relatives who lived in Los Angeles County. In 1910 Judge Smith sold 4 acres (1 km2) near present-day Martins Beach for $500 to John Fenton who built a small house on it known as "Fenton's Landing." By 1912 there were ten households living at Fenton's Landing while another six households lived on adjoining acres owned by Edward Eggleston which became known as "Eggleston Park." In 1915 Ewing Geller bought two hundred acres (8 km2) east of present day West Hills for $5 per acre (0·24 hectare). This land would become known as "Geller Park" after him and his brother Irving Geller purchased it from Raymond Sanford for $10 per acre (0·60 hectare). In 1916 Geller married Edith Haggerty who had moved from San Francisco to Southern California with her husband Charles Aiken Haggerty Jr.. They set up a farmstead west of Florissant Avenue where they raised pigs, chickens and hogs until 1947 when Geller died suddenly aged eighty-six years old without leaving any children behind. His widow continued farming until her death in 2004 having raised seventy pigs since then! After World War II many American servicemen returned home following the war effort; among them were some locals such as Harry Anslinger who served as assistant commissioner of Immigration during 1954–1957 under President Eisenhower When Harry Anslinger opened up Los Angeles County again following Expo '64 he looked for places where people could come together so he could study immigration laws expeditiously During this time period he made contact with some people associated with Fenton's Landing including Altman brothers Jack and Alanson who ran a grocery store at Fenton's Landing before moving to Redondo Beach later that year also working at Anslinger’s office; these men would go on later careers within law enforcement both locally and nationally although they are best remembered today for their role in creating police spying programs during the Nixon era! After Hollywood closed its doors following Expo '68 many Americans decided they'd rather stay put – this led initially to denser populations but eventually more refugees arrived over time making Palos Verdes Estates one of California's most diverse communities aside from Beverly Hills! As more people relocated here more services beganto fade away or disappear completely like libraries which shuttered around 1975 along with other services such as mental healthcare clinics which closed around 1980 due primarily to budgetary reasons joining other districts such as Norwalk which experienced similar budget troubles ). At times like this local governments have responded by passing local ordinances restricting residency or both!) Although government shutdowns have periodically occurred throughout California history they have generally been short-lived affairs lasting less than three weeks . . .
The Palos Verdes Estates area, located in Los Angeles County, California was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. The early pioneers were Spanish colonists who arrived in what is now Palos Verdes Estates in 1836. In 1871, a group of Englishmen purchased land east of downtown Los Angeles and established the city of Westwood. The two cities amalgamated on April 2, 1912 to form Los Angeles City.
