Many new residents came during World War II when Hollywood began to grow up around Palmdale (it wasn't until after 1945 that it really exploded). After World War II ended, many jobs went out of business due to automation so much so that some families lost their jobs and had to move into poverty while others still managed to keep their businesses going despite being hit hard by automation (the " Golden Age".) In recent years, however, as more businesses bring back jobs into town, prices for goods and services have begun to rise again which has helped create some stability even though it can be tough economically times sometimes).

The Palmdale area was first settled by the Native Americans in the early 1800s. The town was founded on a Rancho Palmdale grant from Governor Manuel Micheltorena on September 18, 1853. The grant included land for a post office, school and mill. In 1868, the town became part of Riverside County when it was created from parts of San Bernardino and Orange counties. The first post office opened in 1853 in what is now called Pioneer Square. It served as the county seat until 1870 when Riverside County was organized into districts. The original courthouse building burned down in 1912 and was replaced by a new building which still stands today. In 1916, Palmdale began manufacturing aviation gasoline drums using an open-air plant at its present location on Armstrong Drive. This facility continues to produce drums today and is one of the largest such suppliers in North America. In 1959, Palmdale established itself as an agricultural center with its own irrigation system and market gardens that are still used today. In 1968, PALMDALE INDUSTRIES INC., founded by Roy Scheider, moved its headquarters to nearby Monterrey airport after purchasing land there for $2 million dollars (the equivalent of $266 million today). PALMDALE INDUSTRIES remains one of the most prominent businesses located within downtown Palmdale today with over 50 employees who support more than 350 local jobs across five divisions: Plastics & Rubber; Agricultural; Manufacturing; Storefront/Franchise Development; Corporate Services. From 1969 to 1971, PALMDALE CITY OF PALMDALE held elections for mayor and council members which were notable because they were the first direct elections held in Riverside County since it became part of California following statehood on February 14th, 1850. At this time crime rates inPalmdale had dropped significantly due to community policing initiatives spearheaded by then-Mayor Curt Schilling and Councilmember Bob Dos Passos led city government while other large municipalities like San Bernardino continued to operate under their previous sheriff's department model with little or no input from residents or control over municipal affairs outside of their respective district boundaries
