At that time there were few people living within spitting distance of what would become today's downtown core: east Anaheim Street ran along the eastern edge of Pasadena; west Anaheim Street ran along Interstate 5; north Orange Avenue ran between Eastland Road and North Park Boulevard; south Orange Avenue runs parallel to I-5 across from now-demolished lot where Forest Lawn Memorial Park now stands (and used to be called "Garden Grove"). The first business establishments opened shortly thereafter: a store on Rancho Drive (now La Brea Blvd.), a bakery on Crenshaw Boulevard near Chavez Ravine (now Elysian Fields), a post office on Lankershim Boulevard near San Fernando Valley Regional Airport, an auto dealership at 7600 Lankershim Blvd., and three hotels: The Ambassador Hotel (now Marriott), The Mayfair Hotel (now Hilton Garden Inn), and Casino de la Habana which sat directly adjacent toLos Alamitos Army Air Field until it closed during World War II. In 1922 Pacific Gas & Electric illuminated all blocks east of Harbor Drive with 6288 Edison Pumps running at 350 volts alternating current--the world's first commercial lighting system! This illumination inaugurated one of American industry’s most famous retail strips – “Downtown Disneyland”! The Palmdale, California Economic History Data Book was compiled by the Economic History Section of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1981. The Palmdale district has a population of over 150,000 people and is located in the eastern half of Los Angeles County. The area now includes parts of Orange County and Riverside County. The first Europeans to see what is now Palmdale were traders from Mexico who came down the Santa Ana River in 1846. They named their settlement after Count Palmiro D'Italia, a member of the Mexican commission that surveyed the area for a new capital for Mexico City. The town began as an agricultural community with small outposts scattered around what is today downtown Palmdale. By 1870, however, Palmdale had become an important commercial center with its own flour mill and railroad station. In 1876 it became one of three cities in Southern California chosen to become part of the newly formed city of Los Angeles. During World War II, many jobs were created in shipbuilding and aircraft manufacturing at nearby Northridge Air National Guard Base (now Northridge Community College). After the war ended, many businesses closed or shifted away from agriculture due to competition from larger cities such as Anaheim and San Bernardino. However, other industries soon emerged including electrical engineering and medical technology; both sectors have continued to grow since then. In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place around downtown Palmdale centered around high-end housing developments such as The Grove (formerly known as Regency Village) and Westwood Village/Bel Air Highlands which have brought much needed new life to this once struggling neighborhood A number of large multinational companies have also relocated into downtownPalmdale including Google parent company Alphabet Inc., Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg's cousin Eduardo Saverin's hedge fund firm Fidelity Investments, Apple Inc.'s iPhone factory until it was closed in 2018 by Chinese authorities because they found violations related to intellectual property theft
Palmdale was founded in 1911 by the Palmdale Corporation, a cotton manufacturer. The town became an important center for film production and distribution due to its location on the Hollywood Freeway and its access to sound stages, post-production facilities, and other resources. In 1978, Warner Bros. created the first major studio complex in California when they purchased a tract of land adjacent to Palmdale from the Associated Film Producers of America. The complex became home to both Warner Bros.'s domestic productions (such as "The Lord of the Rings" and "Harry Potter") as well as international films (such as "Ender's Game").
