Palmdale is a city in the southern San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 116,763 at the 2010 census. The area now comprising Palmdale was first settled byermanent Californians in 1847 as Rancho Palmdale. In 1853, John Sutter founded the City of Los Angeles on land that he had purchased from José Murillo de la Garza. The first homes were built in what is now downtown Palmdale and east of Interstate 5 near Redondo Beach. This initial growth was due to cheap labor available from Sutter's successful gold discovery at Mule Run about 20 miles (32 km) to the south. In 1860, James Wickersham bought 3,000 acres (12 km2) east of present day central Palmdale from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $5 per acre ($105 per hectare). He named it Rancho Wickersham after his father-in-law and business partner Colonel George Willard Wickersham who had helped him purchase some land in Sacramento during the 1850s. After years of hard work, Wickersham's ranching empire included over 100 square miles (300 km2) of irrigated agriculture and 1 million chickens that produced eggs for commerce andFeed for hundreds of thousands of people statewide." Wickersham developed a small town around his ranch house on Utopia Road called Villa Park which became an entertainment center for local farmers living west of Pasadena on estate roads called "The Villages". In 1907 writer Fenton Evans wrote an article about life in Villa Park entitled "A People’s Republic: A History and Outlook Of Rancho Villa Park" which won him national attention when published in Scribner’s Magazine two years later." After World War I many families left Villa Park becauseof agricultural depressions brought on by war profiteering by American corporationsOne result was a dramatic increasein crime rates throughoutSouthern California ." In 1924 resident Clarence Rayburn organized a group to improve conditions around town with its original goal being to provide better housing, public schools, water systems and recreational opportunities for residents." Rayburn served as Mayor from 1933 until his death in 1938." In 1951 much progress had been made with plans to build a new library and hospital but these projects were cancelled due to lack of funding" .During this time large tracts northof central Palmdale were annexed into cities such as Torranceand El Monte while smaller towns such as West Covina saw their populations decline." By 1990 only 1/8thofthecity’soriginal area remained untouched ."Today PALMDALE still has many unique features including its highly diverse population(including Hispanics), wide range ol economic interests including agribusiness (+$1 billion annually), major league baseball team (Los Angeles Dodgers), several theaters & art galleries., high school football championship game played at Hollywood Bowl each year , numerous shopping malls located all over Southern California

The discovery inspired entrepreneur Nicholas Simplot to develop a hinterland around Monterey Peninsula called Rancho Santa Margarita which became a major center for citrus production after Mose Allison opened his landmark grove west of Interstate 5 in 1925. However, it wasn't until 1912 when Henry Ford set up his car manufacturing plant on Oak Park Boulevard that the city proper began developing as a commercial center with small streets radiating out from it like spokes on an open wheel; today's Midtown district would not be possible without its precursor .At various points throughout its history, Palmdale has been home to important figures including: ranchers/graziers Pat Garrett and James Buchanan Shriver; businessman Jay Gould; Hollywood starlet Marilyn Monroe; state legislators Hiram Johnson and Edward "Ted" Kennedy; actor Clint Eastwood
The Palmdale town site was developed on the east side of Palmdale, California in 1887. The first settlers were James and Emma Case, who erected the first building on what is now the corner of West Seventh Street and South Boulevard. In 1890, three brothers - Edward, Harry and Willis Beavers - started a fruit stand in what is now part of the old Methodist Church. They later built a frame house next to their stand on South Boulevard. In 1896, John Hoey established a restaurant in what is now Enterprise Place. He would continue to operate his business until 1914 when he closed down due to financial difficulties. A few years later, Happy Jones opened up his own store at Fourth and South Streets. By 1923, there were fourteen businesses operating in Palmdale with a population of about two hundred people. In 1928, the San Bernardino County Agricultural Adjustment Board set up an agricultural fair atPalm Desert Airport which became one of the most popular gatherings in town history. The fair attracted exhibitors from all over Southern California as well as buyers from out of state looking for fresh produce. It was also an opportunity for local farmers to sell their products directly to consumers without going through wholesalers or retailers.
