Today, Palmdale is a thriving community with a diversified economy that includes manufacturing,[2] education,[3] research[4], and health care.[5][6] The history of Palmdale goes back to 1853 when John C. Fremont organized the first farmers’ commune in what is now California. He named it Rancho Palmdale after his father-in-law's land grant near San Francisco Bay which he had settled in 1846. The commune soon outgrew the original site and began construction of their first buildings on what is now Fourth Street between Main Street and Willow Street in 1865. By 1870, they had built three schools (one being destroyed by fire), two churches (one burned down), twenty-four homes (most of which still stand today), four stores/factories/, one Post Office building (destroyed by fire in 1893), six barns/ stables/, five miles of wagon track leading to Golden Valley reservoir (), twelve miles of road leading to Stockton (), four miles of water main () and two hundred acres (.8 km²) of farmland (). During World War II, Camp Pendleton was established at nearby Mather Air Force Base; during this time many American civilians were interned here until 1946 when they were released without charge or restitution to their families living outside California. In 1964–1965 local entrepreneur Don Espey opened what was then known as "America's first business incubator" – later renamed "Don Espey Entrepreneurship Center".[7] That same year saw the founding of UC Berkeley's Haas School Of Business,[8] followed by UCLA Bruins basketball coach Rick Majerus' Regency Ballpark in 1978[9][10] and finally County Fair Parkocated adjacent to PALMDALE High School[11][12][13][14] – all within blocks or less than 10 minutes walking distance from each other! It wasn't until 1990 that PALMDALE'S FIRST POLICE STATION WAS LOCATED NEAR THE TOWN limit line when Sheriff Donny Hathaway assigned deputies from Livermore District 1 station located east side off Depot Road west side off Willits Boulevard just south of I-5 junction! Even today some jurisdictions have jurisdictional boundaries much closer than others...albeit with more sworn officers per capita! Today there are over 900 sworn officers working for our City government including 9 county sheriffs who provide law enforcement services for Kern County & Riverside Counties as well as Imperial County
