He started trading goods with the Mexican military at Fort Tejon and later founded Sutter’s Mill, which became one of America’s largest flour mills. By 1870, guns had become an important part of daily life in Palmdale and other towns near Sutter’s Mill. In 1892, when California became a state, many Mormon pioneers followed suit and set up shop in western California. Some of these men decided to start their own businesses around firearms sales and ammunition stores that sprang up throughout western Kern County (now east Kern County). Firearms sales continued to be an important part of these businesses until about 1920 when prohibition made it illegal for Californians to possess or sell firearms outside of state borders. This “closed-shop” period was brief but important because it helped bring about significant changes in firearm culture within the state as well as throughout most of America during this time period. After prohibition ended on December 6th 1920, firearm sales gradually resumed as people began again to freely possessed weapons across all states without any government restrictions whatsoever (except for Alaska where rifle possession was only allowed by ranchers). This return to Normalcy led directlyto more gun sales due both to personal greed on behalf of some individuals as well as consumer demand following World War II which saw unprecedented levels of gun purchases nationwide (due largely to regulations put in place during World War I).
