The Palmdale area was originally settled by Native American and Mexican settlers in the late 18th century. The first European to arrive in what is now Palmdale was José Antonio Gómez, who landed on Rancho Santa Fe de la Alameda on November 6, 1795. By 1800, the area had become part of Rancho Niguel. In 1881, James Wickersham sold the Rancho Niguel land to Augustus H. Clifford. Clifford established a cotton plantation there and named it after himself, Palmdale Cotton Plantation. In 1895, he sold the property to Samuel Morse and his wife Mabel Loomis Morse for $8 million. They also founded Palmdale Telephone Company which became one of America's largest telephone companies. In 1916, during World War I, General John J. Pershing ordered all American forces in California to march into Pasadena and burn down any buildings that were not directly related to war purposes or military activity. Many residents of Palmdale objected to this order and took refuge inside their homes or in other nearby towns until the order was rescinded two weeks later without incident. By 1925, most of the citrus trees in Palmdale had been killed by freezes so new development began near Interstate 5 with factories built along what is now FM 754 around 1930s-1940s at sites such as Big Valley Drive (now Crescent Dr.), Vinegar Hill Road (now Winchester Rd.), Greer Road (now Eldridge Rd.), and Midway Boulevard (now Lancaster Blvd.). In 1958-1959 local businessman Herb Kelleher purchased some land east of Interstate 5 near Dreamland amusement park for a proposed airport called "Kelleher Field" which never came about but left an lasting legacy: Kelleher Drive runs parallel to I-5 between downtown Los Angeles and South Pasadena serving today as one of Los Angeles' primary shopping corridors despite only having 2 miles of paved surface when it opened in 1959! Palmdale Airport would have spanned about 4/5ths of a mile long runway equipped with hangars on each end capable of accommodating up to 100 planes! While much has changed over the years at Anomalous Air Force Base just east off Harbor Center Drive—the site currently housing Mesa County Community College's El Centro Regional Airport—one thing has not changed: The large palm tree located next door across from Kelleher Airpark remains an iconic symbol associated with Palmendaleakery since its founding
The Palmdale area was first settled in 1851 when the United States government purchased land from theMexican Government. The town was named after Captain James Montgomery, who explored and mapped the area. The first post office was established in 1854. In 1865, a railroad junction was built at Palmdale and it became a center for agricultural production and shipping. During World War II, Palmdale served as an important military base and had a large population of workers in the defense industry. In recent years, Palmdale has become a bedroom community for Los Angeles County residents.
