In the early 1800s, Palmdale was a small town in Los Angeles County, California. It was located just east of downtown and consisted of a few thousand residents. The first ammunition factory in Palmdale was built by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1814. The factory produced shot, cannonballs, and muskets. Smeaton's company produced shot, cannonballs, and muskets from 1836 to 1861. In 1861, Confederate forces invaded America and attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina. Because of this attack,Palmdale became one of the most heavily bombed cities in America during the Civil War. After the Civil War ended, prices for firearms dropped and ammunition became more difficult to find. However, some businesses still continued to produce munitions until around 1920 when production stopped completely due to World War II began). Asbestos contaminated ammunition products were prohibited by law beginning on November 1st 1945 which caused many local businesses to close their doors because they could not compete with imports from Europe which were freely available at that time (this prohibition lasted until 1971). The City Councilmember for District 3 (the easternmost district within Los Angeles County) is Jeff Miller who was elected on November 3rd 2010 after running unopposed in the nonpartisan blanket election held that day - making him the first openly gay candidate ever elected into office in Los Angeles County!
The first post office in Palmdale was established on December 12, 1887. The town became a city on November 3, 1893.
