The name "Palm Springs" originated from the fact that many palms were found near Palm Canyon Road which ran through town. The first people to live in what is now Palm Springs were Native Americans who hunted and gathered plants for food. When Captain John C 1769 arrived at Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico he noted that there were villages of Indians living on both sides of the San Gorgonio River. In 1858 it was discovered that there was an oil well near where Palm Springs now stands and began production immediately. In 1902 Los Angeles County acquired most of what is now Riverside County and as a result Palm Springs became part of Los Angeles County even though it had no voting representation. In 1912 Proposition 8 which banned interracial marriage was passed by voters in California and this led to popular demonstrations throughout Orange County against its passage with palm SPRINGS being one such demonstration area. The city's role in American culture has been large throughout its history including hosting numerous movie premieres and events such as The Academy Awards ceremonies as well as hosting various music festivals such as Summerfestivals (now known as Coachella)
The city of Palm Springs, California was founded on December 15, 1911 by the original owners of the Rancho Mirage tract of land which now includes Palm Springs. The town was named after the two palm trees that stood in the center of its founder's Rancho Mirage property. The first post office in Palm Springs opened in 1912.
