palm Desert, California is a city located in the Mojave desert of Southern California. It has been inhabited by the Kumeyaay people for over 8,000 years and was part of the 21st century's "Great American Reset." The area now known as Palm Desert was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. The City of Palm Desert was incorporated on December 12, 1912. The first scopes were built in Palm Desert by Dr. George Peabody and Professor Hiram Maxim during their investigations into celestial objects in 1862-1863 at Peabody House on North Beach Road near present day Weldon Avenue. In 1916, Samuel Paley brought his refractor telescope to Palm Desert from New York City and set up shop at 3304 Eglinton Avenue which he called "Paley's Observatory." He later sold his observatory to Mr. Ayer who named it after him and continued to offer public observing services until his death in 1957. During World War II, many military personnel stationed here used telescopes for target practice including General Douglas MacArthur who used one at Weldon Ave during Operation Hailstone that destroyed Japanese targets in Southern California. In 1951, Mr. Ayer donated his remaining equipment to University of Arizona (UOA) where it continues to be operated as an undergraduate research telescope under the direction of Drs., Harry Slatkin and Dick Teague since 1971 - making it one of only two university-operated UOA telescopes (the other being Mt Wilson Observatory). In 1965, Gershon Kaper founded Skylight Scientific Corporation with a primary goal of developing new astronomical instruments based upon stretching technology developed by him while working for Sperry Rand Corporation during their work on automated astrographs for space missions led by United States astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin Jr.. Their products included two models: a 10 inch Dobsonian reflector Telescope model SKYLIGHT 2A which became operational on February 14th 1966; followed four months later by another model - SKYLIGHT 2B - which became operational on May 4th 1966 when this particular instrument saw its first observation from Earth using an interplanetary photoelectric cell camera system called " footprint ." At its peak production volume (estimated at 685 units per week), Skylight Scientific Corporation produced over 1 million pieces of astronomical gear each year! This success led them to establish additional facilities around the world such as a factory outside Zurich Switzerland producing components for various skylights all around the world; and finally their current headquarters building located within walking distance from Palmdale/Weldon Valley Regional Airport providing state-of-the art support services for astronomers worldwide! The original equipment manufacturer associated with Skylight Scientific Corp., Sperry Rand Company produced most notably: An Inter planetary Photographic Camera System called Footprint with capabilities including image stabilization; color photography up to ISO 400mm equivalent; autofocus; hand held use or large format output capability utilizing CCD cameras manufactured by Kodak etc.; dozens of high quality eyepieces ranging from small aperture reflexes (<2 inches) down to medium aperture Schmidt & Bender type designs (>4 inches); Nightscape scope lens designs incorporating multiple objectives along with light baffles appropriate both for difficult skies at night time without obscuring stars & planets while still permitting easy viewing during daytime hours whenever light levels permit ; ground mount photographic accessories such as Hoya Spotting Scope Mounting Hardware etc.; numerous types Of Reflectors including Bogen Type Reflectors <1/4 inch thick w/ integrated Fresnel lens etc.; electronic Dioptric Correction Scopes etc.) Skylight Scientific Corporation continued production until 1985 when they merged with Sperry Jupiter Optics AG resulting in what is now SummitOptical USA Incorporated specializing exclusively in optics sales & service related activities global WIDE OPEN architecture signifying their continuing commitment towards customer satisfaction through innovative product design strategy . In 1868, they built the world's first successful telescope, the 18-inch (45 cm) Newtonian reflecting telescope. In 1871, the company made a major investment in new technology when they bought an English patent for a new type of mirror called a "coating" mirror that allowed telescopes to be made with greater accuracy and detail than ever before. The company also began making large refractor telescopes which became very popular. In 1896 they developed and manufactured their own reflector telescope called the Storey Titan which was considered one of the most advanced telescope designs at that time. The company went bankrupt in 1899 but reformed under different ownership including John Hutton who purchased it back from bankruptcy and continued making high quality telescopes until his death in 1923. The current owner is Riddle Observatory which opened its doors on November 3rd, 2010

The town of Palm Desert, California was founded in 1887 by George H. Humphreys and his wife, Anna L. Humphreys. The first post office was established in 1888, and the present town was annexed by Riverside County in 1912. The Palmdale Oil Field was discovered near Palm Desert in 1911, and production began in 1912. In 1916, the United States entered World War I and Palm Desert became a military base. The post office closed in 1929; however, it reopened on July 1, 1930, as part of the new Riverside County government.
