palm Desert, California is a town in Palm Desert County, California. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north side of Palm Desert and borders Indio to the east and west. The first rifles were made here in 1875 by W.H. Hays, an American rifle manufacturer from Sacramento, California. In 1911, Charles Eppinger started making rifles here as well. He also became one of the largest manufacturers of firearms in the United States and his products were sold throughout North America and Europe. Many people who have been involved with firearm production over the years have had their hand-in-hand with Charles Eppinger when they worked at his company or visited him at his factory in Palm Desert during those days. There are several different rifle stocks that can be seen around town today that date back to this time including parts from many of these famous firearms companies such as Eppinger Rifle & Pistol Company stock #5A6C1 dated 1916 used by Clarence Elliott for deer hunting in Yosemite National Park; part from Browning Arms Company stock #020E3 dated 1889 used by John Dory for target shooting at Sacto Dam; a Winchester Model 1892 lever action rifle stock (#Winchester 1890 Lever Action Cowboy Rifle Stock) owned by Harry Smith which he acquired while working as a gunsmith for Cimarron Firearms Corporation; and finally an old Remington Model 790 pump shotgun stock measuring 44" long (11" wide) dating back to 1907 that was used by Harvey Beaumont for pest control work around his home near Indio when he was owner/operator of Beaumont's Gun Shop

The city of Palm Desert, California was founded in 1888 by J.P. Morgan and his partner, George H. Smith. The city is located in the San Bernardino Mountains, about 30 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles on Interstate 10. Palm Desert became a municipally chartered town on December 15, 1912 following a vote by the residents of neighboring Riverside County. At that time it was one of the most sparsely populated areas in Southern California and had an estimated population of only 100 people. In 1923, Palm Desert incorporated as a City with a population size of 1,500 residents and its first mayor was John Ahern. In 1951, Palm Desert annexed part of neighbouring Fallbrook to increase its population to 6,000 citizens. During the 1960s and 1970s Palmdale experienced rapid growth as businesses moved into the area from other parts of Southern California for cheap housing prices and new jobs in aerospace research and engineering industry which characterized much of what is now known as Downtown Palm Desert
