This rifle range was eventually acquired by John Cockerill Jr., who continued to use it until 1915 when it became the basis for building the current Gunsite Shooting Complex located adjacent to Interstate 5 & Richards Boulevard on palm trees bordering Riverside County (now within City Limits of Riverside). What is now known as Gunsite Shooting Complex began operations on November 4th, 1975 under then name "Rancho Niguel Rifle Range". In 1978, after years of planning by then Mayor Pro Tem Donny Youngblood (D), city Council voted 3-2 to rename the complex "Gunsite" following establishment of an annual $1 million fund for local non-profit organizations which would benefit from increased access and use of our facility including adaptive sports programs for children aged 6 months through 12 years old; music concerts during off hours; public meetings/campaign rallies; law enforcement functions such as hostage negotiations or crime prevention; etc... On October 21st,1980 - just one year shy of its 10 year anniversary - Gunsite celebrated its 100th birthday with a gala dinner attended by City Manager Donny Youngblood along with Commanders from various Law Enforcement Agencies celebrating what has been accomplished over that time period thru responsible programming/activities sanctioned through City Council resolutions & Executive Order’s issued heretofore! It is safe to say that without Gunsite we very well may not have any semblance whatsoever today of security or situational awareness whatsoever outdoors anywhere near ANY major city center anywhere near!!! The first Europeans to visit what is now Palm Desert were members of Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto's expedition in 1542-43. At that time, much of present-day Orange County was still part of Mexico and there was no knowledge or interest within Spain in exploring or colonizing what are now Southern California and Nevada. De Soto's group made landfall on February 6, 1542 on Santa Catalina Island off southern Joshua Tree National Park while traveling southeastward along what is now known as Interstate 10. A year later, Alonso de Alvarado led another expedition into what is now Central America when he discovered new gold fields near Socorro City in New Mexico Territory (now Albuquerque). This led to increased Mexican interest in California and investigations with more permanent settlements began at Mission Rancho San Francisco on December 17, 1817 by Captains José Figueroa y Costilla and Manuel Margarita y Loma underMilitary Governor Antonio Lopez de Legazpi from Yuma County (in today's Arizona). During post war years many homes were built up around outdoor pool/Jacuzzi complexes called “Pondexteritis” after some very rich people who decided they didn’t want their children living close enough so they built themselves a compound out back surrounded by expensive landscaping complete with ponds & gardens !!
