Palm Desert is a city in Riverside County, California, United States. The population was 198,831 at the 2010 census. Palm Desert is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and has been its most populous city since 1980. It is adjacent to Cathedral City and Joshua Tree National Park. The first settlement in what is now Palm Desert was made by Mexicans who were working on the Palmdale Ranch in 1847. A post office was established at Indian Wells in 1851, and named for John Sutter, an American explorer who had explored parts of California before reaching San Diego Bay in 1849. The first settlers were Mormon pioneers from Utah who came to California during the Gold Rush of 1848-1849. They built a small town called North Valley near present day Palm Desert on October 15, 1850, north of Indian Wells Station on what later became known as the North Rim Trail of the San Bernardino Mountains. In 1861 a group of Anglo Americans led by James Waddell founded Fillmore Ranch which would become one of Southern California's largest ranching operations with over 2 million acres (800 km2). In 1916 both Fillmore and Waddell died suddenly when their aircraft crashed while flying to deliver supplies to nearby Mountain View Naval Air Station.(Northridge Airport) In 1920 an act by then Governor Hahn provided funds for building a new college campus called University Of Southern California(USC). The site that eventually became USC had been used by several schools including Orange Lutheran College (now Claremont Colleges) which opened its doors in 1893 and moved to Fullerton in 1907; Normal School which opened its doors in 1908; Moorpark College which opened its doors in 1912; and teacher training school known as Western Teachers Institute(WTI) which opened its doors at Fullerton High School on December 1st 1915.) At this time there were only 8 students attending USC with corresponding faculty numbering 21 people! From 1923 until 1978 it was also home to six other colleges/universities: La Jolla Community College (opened 1951), Irvine Museum of Art (opened 1957), Dana Point Coast Guard Academy(opened 1959), Pomona College OC (opened 1964), Santa Monica College OC (opened 1967), UC Riverside(University Campus) . Plus many smaller institutes such as Towne Center Technical Institutes(TCTI) located just off I-10 West exit 164A about 5 miles east of downtown LA On February 17th 2009 it was announced that USC would close due to budget reductions set into motion by then President George W Bush following 9/11 Attacks
The city of Palm Desert, California was founded in 1887 by John S. Reed and his family. The city limits were enlarged in 1907 to encompass the present-day town of Palm Springs.
