Pacifica, California is a town in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 11,541 at the 2010 census. Pacifica is located adjacent to Oakland and east of Berkeley. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The mining communities that developed around what are now Pacifica and downtown Oakland were known as "the East Bay" settlements because they were near the eastern edge of what is now Silicon Valley. Mining operations stopped after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire which destroyed most of the eastern hills inOakland. The first permanent settler in Pacifica was John Sutter who arrived on September 17, 1847 from Napa County, California with his family. They named their land Sutter's Ranch after him. The ranch became a sheep and cattle station before becoming a farming community with orchards and vineyards until it was purchased by James Waring in 1907 for $6000 as part of his purchase of Alameda County from The Bechtel Company. Waring turned it into an agricultural research center during World War I which led to its nickname "The People's University". Pacifica also became one of the early home sites for many leading American physicists including Albert Einstein, Max Born, Robert Boyle and Carl Jungian analyst Wilhelm Reich who lived at 4252 Key Road (now renamed International Boulevard). In 1923–24Pacifica hosted the first international conference on quantum mechanics held at Berkeley under auspices of UNESCO under then-vice president Franklin D Roosevelt with eminent scientists from 25 countries attending including Einstein; Heisenberg; Max Born; Niels Bohr; Werner Heisenberg; and Alfred North Whitehead among others In 1957 when Interstate 5 was built through parts of Northern California south of Los Angeles everything north of I-5 was annexed by Los Angeles County making Pacifica within its boundaries once again becoming an enclave surrounded by city limits rather than within county boundaries like it had been since 1847 when JamesWaring purchased land here from The Bechtel Company
The first permanent European settlement in what is now California was by Spanish mission in 1769. In 1821, the Mexican government granted Rancho San Francisco to James K. Polk, who eventually became president of the United States. The site of present-day Pacifica had been part of a small rancho that fell into private hands and was abandoned in 1847. A group of American soldiers under Captain John C. Fremont discovered gold near the site on November 8, 1850, making it the first successful gold rush in California. The discovery led to a rapid population growth and development at nearby Pacifica, which began to become known as "the Golden Gate City".Pacifica prospered because it was an attractive location for agriculture and water production due to its strategic position between two major navigable rivers: the Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers. By 1870, Pacifica boasted a population of 10,000 people and had built up a significant infrastructure including schools and churches. However, during the early years of World War I (1914-18), business conditions deteriorated rapidly due to increased military spending by America's allies (such as France) on war efforts abroad while America itself sought neutrality. This negative economic environment contributed significantly to the city's loss of prosperity after 1918.
