It relocated to its current location on KPFA-FM (1070 AM) in San Francisco in 1967. The first transmission of KPFA's commercial frequency took place on December 12th,1967 from a small shack near Telegraph Avenue and Market Street in downtown San Francisco. A few months later, KPFA became the first community media outlet to originate programming from satellite uplink at Vandenberg Air Force Base using an AN/PRC-6 Antenna Sheath unit and RP-8R Receiver Unit developed by then student at UC Berkeley’s School of Radio Engineering graduate students Bob Blanding and Don Freeman - followed by KHON – Honolulu’s main AM broadcaster a few years later with their own UHF tower on top of Morningside Heights Cemetery! In 1971, when KQED changed its call sign to “Powell” following The Gold Rush rush that had begun nearby at Fruitvale BART Station, the new name reflected both KQED’s history as one of the original stations licensed to Berkeley while also embodying a sense of community Radioactivity which would continue through many decades until it eventually faded away during digital transition! It wasn't until 2006 when programmer Alix Perez started working for KPFA after leaving KNXE Austin TX following several years as Program Manager for KRZY Phoenix AZ Public Broadcasting System!) before coming back East full time to help lead our stations into digital age where we are still playing hardball today but MUCH more civil and balanced than what you've ever heard here before!
Pacifica, California was founded in 1867 by Antonio Sanchez and his wife María de la Cruz as a trading post on the San Francisco Peninsula. The name was derived from the Native American word "paihtse" meaning "the great bay." In 1875, Pacifica became an agricultural center with a sawmill, livery stable, and four stores. In 1886, it became the first town in Sonoma County when Rancho San Pablo was granted to Captain George Hearst. Pacifica's population increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to its commercial importance and development of agriculture. In 1907, Pacifica was incorporated as a city and continued to grow until World War II when itshrank back to its original size because of the high demand for military supplies caused by the war. After World War II, Pacifica experienced rapid growth as a bedroom community forSonoma County residents. However, during the 1990s there began to be concerns thatPacifica may lose some of its economic significance if new housing developments beganto increase in popularity in nearby Santa Rosa and Petaluma regions
