Pacifica, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 40,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first permanent European settler in what is now Contra Costa County was José Altamirano who arrived on December 4, 1847 from Pueblo de San Antonio de Atascadero, Mexico. He named his new land "Pacifica" after the open ocean and paradise he saw there. The town of Pacifica was founded by Michael Sells in 1850 on the site of an earlier post office building which had been destroyed by fire five years earlier. In 1853–54Pacifica built its first schoolhouse and store on Second Street between North Avenue and Santa Cruz Creek. In 1861 Pacifica's first post office opened with Wm Mosely as mail carrier and first clerk. A year later it became a station on the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP). In 1865 it became a mill town when the Northern Pacific Railroad built a line through town to bring logs from mills near Stockton to be turned into lumber for shipbuilding in nearby Sacramento. In 1870s various small businesses were established in downtown Pacifica such as: Jardin Pharmacy &oultic Shop (founded by Drs John Dolan and Cornelius Fenton), Hennepin Sawmill (which still stands today), Mrs Gifford Store (established by Mrs Gifford Wright) and Cafe Italico (opened by Italian immigrants Giovanni Battista Manzoni and his wife Caterina). By 1880 most of these businesses had either closed or moved away due to competition from larger local businesses like Sears & Roebuck, Wells Fargo & Co., Alameda Mills Inc., Gold Nugget Mine etc.. However some of these original pioneers including Jardin Pharmacy &oultic Shop still stand today! In 1886Pacifica's only bank opened – First National Bank – which continued until 1907 when it merged with Northern Trust Company to become First Western National Bank At this time another early pioneer in Downtown Pacifica was Captn Clarence King who started King Bros grocery store at 5th Street between Magnolia Boulevard and Central Avenue. This store would continue expanding until it occupied entire 3rd floor of old Union School Building at 3000 Webster Ave before finally moving out around 1990-1991 when that building went up for sale . Between 1886-1907 many important people moved or died including Captn Clarence King who started king Bros grocery store
