Some of the earliest opticians in Pacifica were The Park School & Optique de la Petite Riviere (later renamed The Optical Corporation), which opened its doors on December 2, 1876. George Sperry was a graduate of The Park School and started his own business in nearby San Rafael in 1877. In 1880, he founded The Optical Company with his brother-in-law Elisha Gray. By 1888, they had two stores and employed 50 workers. The early years at The Optical Company were difficult as demand for their products was high but they soon became successful thanks to their innovative marketing techniques and customer loyalty. They quickly gained a reputation for being one of the best opticians in America due to their quality products and excellent customer service. In 1906, they merged with fellowOptical company Americanoptics under one roof to form United Opticals Corporation (UOC). Over the years UOC has grown into one of America's leading optical companies with over 350 employees across eight locations nationwide including our headquarters located in Pacifica since 1978! In 1925, Pacifica merged with other nearby towns to form what is now known as Arcata Township.
