The first people to inhabit what is now Pacifica, California were the Tongva. They lived along the coast of present-day Santa Barbara County between Mission San Gabriel and Mission Santa Cruz. The Tongva were a group of Native Americans who spoke an Alaskan language. In 1542, Spanish explorers discovered their land and began to build missions here. By 1821, the mission system was defunct in California, and all vestiges of it had been abandoned when Mexico acquired it after winning independence from Spain. In 1847, following Mexican independence, the United States acquired part of California as well as parts of Nevada and Arizona. The area became known as American Samoa because no one living there could speak English fluently. As part of this acquisitions, the government set up a military post on Unalaska Island in what is now Victoria Harbor in order to keep watch over American Samoa while other portions of California were being explored for new settlements. In 1849–50 Pacifica was added to Rancho Los Olivos (later called Rancho Santa Fe) which wasowned by José Joaquin Moraga y Salinas; Antonio López de Quesada; Manuel Nieto; Fernando Ortiz; and Vicente Pacheco y Valdés among others. The land grant extended from Point Conception northward along present-day State Route 101 until its intersection with Russian River Boulevard near Redondo Beach on April 6, 1850. On that date also Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo landed at Point Conception with his ship Astoria on a reconnaissance mission for Spanish America Company under Captain Lorenzo de Anchuros sailing under orders from Governor Felipe De La Torre. Pacifica grew rapidly during this time period due to its close proximity to both beachheads where waves crashing onto shore caused valuable materials like salt water tins and brine shrimp to be found washed up onshore or scattered around in puddles or small bays like Today’s Zuma Bight near Point Loma today’s North Shore Pier). For many years local farmers grew crops such as wheat, barley, cottonseed oil palms (Tamarindus sp.), watermelons (Cucurbitas arborea), oranges ( Citrullus lanatus ), tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum ), almonds (Picea abies ) , potatoes (Ipomoea batatas ), onions (Allium annuum ), gingerroot (Zingiber officinale variegatum ), wild rice( Oryza sativa L.) , chaparral/oak forest/grasslands etc., providing needed goods and services necessary fordays life on campus including housing, kitchen facilities etc.. The area that is now Pacifica was first settled by the Ohlone people in the late 18th century. The region became a part of Mexican territory following the Mexican-American War of 1848, and then became part of United States territory after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The town of Pacifica was founded in 1850, and soon developed into a major agricultural center. It remained an important cultural center until the early 21st century, when it largely lost its population tothe growth of nearby San Francisco.
