In 1892, American gun magazine Pacifica was founded in Pacifica, California. The company continued to be published until 1951. Pacifica's first issue was a special edition of the then-new "Gunsmith" magazine. It featured an early article on firearms by NRA founder and president David Broughton. That same year, the company also created the first rifle magazine in the United States with a cover featuring an American Beauty by Edward Hopper. Over time, Pacifica became known for its high quality issues and its unique layout which made it one of the most popular gun magazines in America at that time. Its articles were often reprinted elsewhere and were highly influential among shooters across the country. The company also produced a line of firearms accessories including riflescopes and shotguns magazines which continues to this day. In addition to their print publication, PACIFICA ALSOproduced two audio tapes related to firearm education called "The Gunsmith Manual" (in 1984) and "Firearms: A User's Guide" (in 1990).

Pacifica was founded in San Francisco by a group of friends in 1947. The name came from the Pacific Ocean and its location on Telegraph Hill, which overlooks the city. The first store opened on Market Street in 1949. Pacifica grew rapidly, and by 1951 had a store on Nob Hill. In 1953, Pacifica became an independent company. In the early 1960s, Pacifica began to focus on radio programming as well as providing educational materials about important California history. In 1964, the company merged with Bay Area Radio Corporation (BARCO). BARCO was then responsible for all media content at Pacifica; it also operated the stations within its footprint. In 1996, PACIFICA Broadcasting System Inc., successor to BARCO Media Holdings Inc., was formed to operate all PacifiCana stations under one roof - marking the first time that any media company had owned and operated all PacifiCana stations simultaneously. In 2007 PACIFICA sold its remaining interest in BARCO Media Holdings Inc.'s stake in PacifiCana to Univision Communications Inc.; this left PACIFICA with just seven stations across California.
