He named his post "Pacifica" after his native Samoa (then under British rule). When he died in 1849, his heirs decided that "Pascua" should be used instead and so the post continued to be called Pascua until it was renamed Pacifica in 1861 when white men first began moving into what is now Peninsula County (between San Mateo and Santa Cruz counties) east of San Francisco Bay
