The opening of Interstate 80 through central California during the 1960s caused increased traffic demands on Highway 101 between San Francisco and Oakland, leading to decreased demand for produce grown by farmers along Highway 26 between those cities and Macondo Canyon National Park near Bakersfield, Ca., creating shortages that resulted in price hikes for food items exported to Europe in 1972–1973
