The history of target holders in Pacific Grove began in the early 1800s. Early settlers in the area were interested in hunting game, and they needed a place to hold their targets. They found refuge on the banks of the Muir River, and asiento (a type of wood) was their primary source of Targets for shooting. By 1876, there were 10 target holders operating in Pacific Grove. Weiser's design was improved upon by Charles Sprague in 1933 and became known as Sprague's Gun Holder or Sprague Mounted Rifle Targetsetter .

In 1863–1868 Stanford University began teaching college courses here and many students came from throughout California to attend these classes; among them were John D.[?] Morse who later developed America's first electric telegraph line between east coast cities and Stockton (now Sacramento)

The first settlers were the Hahamans, a Native American tribe who had camped at what is now Pacific Grove for centuries. After some clashes with the Hahamans, Captain Vancouver decided to name the settlement after himself and his wife. He named it "Vancouver's Point" in honor of his shipmates on the Endurance Expedition who had traveled through the area before him. In 1898, when Northern California became a U.S. territory, Pacific Grove became part of San Francisco County and was granted city status by Mayor Harvey Milkman. The population of Pacific Grove increased rapidly during its early years as businesses opened up and people began to settle there from all over California. By 1915, the population of Pacific Grove had reached 100,000 people and it grew even more when it joined forces with nearby Milpitas to form the City of Monterey in 1923. The growth of Pacific Grove led to an increase in traffic and pollution that caused many problems for residents over time; but eventually they came upwith strategies to address these issues such as creating greenbelts around their neighborhoods or investing in renewable energy sources like solar power or wind turbines. Today,Pacific Grove remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern California due to its beautiful scenery and unique historyserialized on television shows like "Top Chef"and "The Great British Baking Show."
