Pacific Grove is a small town in the Silicon Valley of California. It is located on the coast of San Francisco Bay and has a population of about 8,000 people. The town was founded in 1859 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and his family as part of the land grant given to him by General George C. Marshall. The townsite at Pacific Grove was first settled by Native Americans in the late eighteenth century. In 1859, Augustus Saint-Gaudens purchased 2,500 acres (10 km2) of land along the bay from John Broughton and began to build a house there. In 1870, Japanese American entrepreneur Japan Iwakura established an olive oil business at Pacific Grove that became one of the largest olive oil businesses in North America. Iwakura's business thrived until World War II when it was shut down due to wartime regulations designed to reduce production by enemy forces. After World War II, many Japanese Americans emigrated to California, starting what is called "the demographic dividend" which saw an increase in diversity among Californians and an increased number of ethnic minorities within their midst – leading to efforts to preserve traditional cultural values within California's non-Hispanic white majority population during this time period through such measures as affirmative action programs and community redevelopment schemes). There have been many people who have lived in and around Pacific Grove, California. The area has been inhabited by the Ohlone people for over 10,000 years. In 1821 the United States acquired land in what is now Pacific Grove through the Mexican-American War. The town was founded in 1868 by George Washington Goodwin and his wife Harriet Beecher Stowe. The town quickly became a center for agriculture and industry, with a growing population of workers from outside of California. In 1907,Pacific Grove designated itself an incorporated town under the jurisdiction of the San Francisco Bay Area. The townsfolk started to build homes on their acreage starting in 1870s and 1880s. A small amount of housing construction took place until World War II when most of the housing was built for military personnel or their families living near Naval Station Pier 391 (later Naval Air Station Miramar). Many residents also developed property close to Interstate Highway 80 which facilitated easy access to jobs in Silicon Valley and other major metropolitan areas during that time period. After the war, much development took place as people tried to bring new life into what had once been a sleepy community. Currently, there are over 2,500 residents living within walking distance of downtown Pacific Grove as well as over 100 businesses that are located within its limits
