After landing at Point Reyes Station, he founded Victoria, British Columbia on May 14th, 1840. He named his new settlement after Sir John Franklin's lost ship HMS Erebus which had been sunk by blubbering whales in 1776 off Cape Horn. The first post office was established at Point Reyes Station on July 1st, 1846. Some years later, a store was built on top of an old fur trade depot that had been abandoned by its previous occupants due to firewood shortages caused by a drought that year. For many years there was no telephone service or electricity becauseof unreliable Indian moorings used by early sailors while they explored this area north of Monterey Bay
On November 7, 1879, the first post office was opened in Pacific Grove. The town was named for Admiral John B. Daly of the United States Navy and his wife, Anna Maria Sutter. In 1905, Pacific Grove High School was built on what is now Main Street. In 1916, the town renamed itself after Annie Jumpkin Lowell because she had given a speech at a fundraiser to help support the war effort.
