Pacific Grove is a small town in Santa Clara County, California, United States. It lies east of San Jose and west of Menlo Park. The population was 7,539 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Pacific Grove was Juan Bautista de Anza on October 19, 1769. He named it Rancho el Nuevo Cabañal after his Rancho San Rafael del Palo Alto in present-day Bernardo Heights, which he had visited earlier that year. In 1827, John Sutter founded the city of Sacramento on the site of present-day Pacific Grove. Sutter's ranchos were located adjacent to each other on two hills southeast of downtown Sacramento; when both ranches were sold in 1853, their boundaries were redrawn and they became separate townships. Pacific Grove was platted as a town in 1865 by Hennepin County Commissioners James Waddell and Augustus Kelley because they saw potential for growth there due to its location between Menlo Park and San José and its proximity to Keddie Ranch (now part of Almaden Valley). The first post office opened in 1870; local landowner Gouverneur Morris donated $10 per acre for a public square near the depot. In 1886–87, Postmaster General Amos Kendall ordered new postal service buildings built closer to town so that mail could be more quickly delivered here instead of being transported away every day during California's long summers. The Panicof 1893 caused intense rural deflation that hit Pacific Grove particularly hard; many residents left the town for lack of work or opportunity. The closure of Bradford Mills textile company also did much damage to local economy as many workers fled to nearby cities during this time period seeking employment opportunities elsewhere. However, some people soon reopened businesses such as Jardine & Mathews Hairdressers where all women were employed until 1955 when men began working there too . Afterward few people returned but many detached themselves from larger communities throughout Northern California due to changes brought about by World War II then rapid social transformation throughout most major US cities following World War II . Many residents who remained chose not return after post-war suburbanization increased bedroom sizes nationwide while reducing need for industrial jobs
