In 1922 Stinson unveiled plans for what would become Safeway Stores - one of largest grocery stores ever constructed - at Fourth Street & Market Place east of downtown Pacific Grove Village. It wasn't until 1969 when Safeway moved their corporate headquarters from Oakland to Safeway Plaza adjacent to Interstate 280 that they realized their dream: build a huge food market within walking distance of all their stores across three levels with an underground parking garage capable of accommodating 2 million customers per day!
