In 1851, when California became a state, Pacific Grove was part of Alameda County. In 1868, it became part of San Francisco County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pacific Grove were Spaniards in 1769; they were looking for an anchorage for their ships on the coast between Point Reyes and Monterey Bay. A year later a group of Chinese laborers under the command of Captain James Cook discovered and mapped much of this area during his third voyage as commander of HMS Discovery (1777-79). Upon his return to England he reported that he had found "a great bay or inlet" than had been seen before in America's northwest coast which he named Eel Bay after one of his crewmen - Engadine (now known as James Cook Strait). When gold was discovered along coastal California's southern border by Don Pedro Fustiano in 1858, many people decided to move there because land prices were so low. A group led by George Hearst founded Hearst Castle on October 14th 1860 near what is now Hearst Road across from Fort Point National Monument. On November 12th 1860 Samuel Morse sent a telegraph message from Santa Clara Valley through Joshua Slocum which read: "Mr David Stone has established himself at Pg Cove." This news spread quickly through Northern California ports and triggered off what would be called the Gold Rush era in North America with over 50 million people searching for gold throughout Western Canada and Mexico City alone by 1870. By 1872 both sides had exhausted all available resources within 2 years and most Americans had left for months at a time to prospect for goldfields around Yuma River in Arizona Territory while others headed eastward towards Ohio and Pennsylvaniapennsylvania where silver lay hidden among coal seams.. On January 6th 1861, following President Abraham Lincoln's Executive Order No.(2) concerning riots that might erupt during secession debates over newly acquired states' rights within Southern United States(3), Ulysses S Grant ordered 10 miles wide strip mines opened along US 101 south of Sacramento City just outside present day Pacific Grove where pay dirt was scooped out using carts or wagons until 1865 when hand drills replaced these methods yielding more consistent results with yields coming up to 20%. These strips yielded such high grades that water powered Lateraneely Beattyand Company built two large dams downriver past Polacca about 1915-1920 driving flooding which destroyed many homes & businesses particularly those upstream nearpresent day Redwood Shores beach but also creating some new sites including Atascadero Creek & present day Steinway Beach giving rise to another name - Golden Gate Park! Although not directly responsible for this latter development Much has been written about how grants like Grant’s encouraged settlement westward via various forms roadway building projects (& other engineering feats) – largely overshadowing local efforts going back several decades prior

It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and lies on the eastern edge of Palo Alto. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Pacific Grove were Apaches who established a small village near the present-day intersection of State Route 12 and Post Road in 1846. The first settler to be officially recognized as a part of Pacific Grove was James Irvine in 1869. Pacific Grove began as an agricultural community with fruit orchards and dairy herds, but by the early 20th century its economy had shifted to technology and engineering businesses. In 1923, General Electric's new headquarters were built on land that once housed a cattle ranch belonging to Hyland Doheny, one of GE's co-founders. In 1955, Baby Bell Telephone Company moved from their original building at 13th Street and Masonic Avenue to their new campus across from Stanford University at 14th Street and Mason Avenue. The company left behind two large phone poles (now known as "the bell curve"), which remain prominent landmarks in downtown Pacific Grove today.
