The area that would become Pacific Grove was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first European to visit what is now Pacific Grove was Captain James Cook on his mapping expedition of 1769-1770. In 1876, John Muir set up a summer home here after traveling through this part of California for many years seeking natural surroundings to enhance his writing about Yosemite National Park and other trails he traveled. In 1906, Congress designated areas along the entire coast as part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area which included much of what is now Pacific Grove. In 1941, during World War II, General George Smedley Butler's posse burned down nine homes in what would become known as "the burn." This event ignited public sentiment against military activities and created an increased interest in conservationism among local residents who had long opposed such things; within a few years most of the homes had been rebuilt or replaced with more aesthetically pleasing structures including several churches and schools that still stand today. These days, both residential and commercial development takes place around downtown Pacific Grove with only a very small portion remaining undeveloped. Today there are over 50 businesses in downtown Pacific Grove with approximately 4500 people employed there full time or contractually throughout various industries including health care services (Kaiser Permanente), technology (Apple Inc.), restaurants (Boulevard Café & More), retail therapy (Pineapple Express), professional services (Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center) as well as cultural events (Sonoma State Opera). There are also numerous volunteer organizations active here including Habitat for Humanity International affiliates who work on rehabilitating blighted properties outside of town while Save Our Shoreline works to protect coastal strand habitats inside town limits from destruction by development projects like Marina Del Rey Naval Base expansion plans scheduled to begin soon!

Pacific Grove is a small town located in Santa Cruz County, California. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The Mission of San Francisco Xavier and Presidio of Monterey were founded in 1778 by Father Francisco Márquez y Arellano and Father José Ortega y Gasset respectively. As part of the Mexican-American War, American forces attacked the presidio on July 14, 1846. A combined force of Californios and Americans fought off an attackers’ force that included General Winfield Scott and his staff. In 1851, Pacific Grove became a part of the newly formed State of California when it was admitted to the Union as a result of the Mexican-American War. The city's first post office opened in 1865. The city was named for Captain James Cook who sighted land northeast of San Francisco on September 12,1777 while sailing under Admiral John Drake's command during his exploration expedition along what is now known as Almaden Strait (and formerly called Tiburon Peninsula). Cook named it "Pacific Grove" after his ship HMS Resolution which he sailed into Golden Gate Bay on December 12 following his return from Tahiti on November 24th 1779 with news that Japan had sent ships to explore this area (Fukushima Expedition). On October 10th 1888, Pacific Grove incorporated as a town under state law #27(). Since its incorporation; Pacific Grove has grown rapidly with over 2 million residents now living within its borders! In keeping with its namesake: There are many activities/leisure opportunities available here including exploring our natural beauty; enjoying delicious local cuisine; taking walks around our serene neighborhoods populated by friendly people who live close by; or just spending time inside our walls! While some people may feel like their privacy is violated when out walking or driving through town center areas where there are lots of people present (I have personally experienced this!), overall I believe that living in such an open community allows us to connect more easily with one another - making for an even better quality life experience!
