British explorer Ernest Shackleton led a team of Endurance crew members on an attempt to cross the Antarctic continent in 1915. Shackleton's group was the first human beings ever to set foot on the continent, and their journey is often considered as one of the greatest feats in man's history. In 1825, Spanish ship La Paz chartered two boats and set out for the islands. The first boat reached Santa Cruz Island on November 12th and was met by an angry mob of natives who beat the sailors. The second boat arrived on November 15th but also encountered resistance from the natives so it returned home without exploring further. After this incident, Spanish ships never again visited the island until 1898 when American forces invaded Guam and captured it as part of their campaign to retakeisdom Guam from Spain.

Pacific Grove's namesake is an area of geography near Monterey Bay that has been called "The Grove" since 1869 when John C. Frémont and his party explored the area during their trip westward from San Francisco. At first it was primarily a farming community, but as more people came to live there the town began to grow. Pacific Grove is located on the east coast of Santa Clara County between San Jose and Oakland. It is bordered by Livermore to the north and east, Menlo Park to the south, Palo Alto to the west, and East Palo Alto to the northwest. The town center is located in what used to be called "The Village", which includes both its commercial districts (the "Old Town" section on Main Street between Fourth Street and Sixth Street) and its residential areas (the "New Town" section on Seventh Avenue between Blakely Road and Morningside Drive). Pacific Grove was founded in 1869 by John CairnsFrémont as part of his exploration of what would become California. At first it was primarily a farming community with just a few farms scattered around central Pacific Grove; however, over time more people started moving into this area because of its excellent location for agriculture—on top of a hill overlooking Monterey Bay—and easy access to transportation such as ferries or trains. As more people moved into this area they set up businesses such as stores, hotels/motels, etc., which helped support the growth of Pacific Grove until it reached its current size today. Most notable among those who originally settled in Pacific Grove were John Muir who founded Yosemite National Park here in 1903; JB Healey who served as Mayor from 1954-1964; Jerry Seinfeld who grew up here; Bill Gates who graduated from high school here; Chuck Norris who lived here for many years before moving back home to Oklahoma City after he retired from bodybuilding competitions; actor Jack Nicholson whose parents also lived here for many years before he moved away at age 8; author Ken Follett whose familyowned one of Pacifc Groves' mostfamous grocery stores for many years before selling it off in 2006; musician Neil Youngbloods band formed here in 1978 after moving from Lodi Calif.; singer-songwriter Willie Nelson also spent some time living in PG during college while attending nearby Stanford University
