In 1949 representative Henry Waxman introduced a bill establishing the boundaries of Marin County which included Pacific Grove within its bounds - thus becoming one side effect of that same bill! In 1850s many Protestants began arriving to farm and ranch in the area around present day Pacific Grove after they were expelled from Spanish California following Mexican independence proclamation in1846. By 1860 most of what would become known as Northern Santa Barbara County had been developed and by 1870 there were over 230 people living hereabouts including 40 pastors associated with various denominational churches serving the growing region then known as "the Central Coast". In 1875 local dentist Dr Samuel Morse opened his practice at Whatcom Creek where he remains today considered one of Southern California's leading healthcare providers A major event that took place here on October 15th 1888 when giant waves crashing onto shore near Point Sur led to creation of Highway 101 which runs through downtown or "Old Town"pacificgrove while Highway 9 splits off from US 101 about 0 miles southwest becoming Highway 29 . This significant event helped start what is now known as "the Beach Culture" throughout much of coastal Southern California during this period making Peninsula creating an important sea port for goods going up the Central Coast long before containerization began
