In 1834, Commodore John D’Arcy Adams sailed his ship "Alacrity" into Ventura Harbor and anchored there while he built his private cabin on Point Mugu (now part of Ventura). He became friendly with local merchants and decided to open up trade with this new region. Adams opened up a store on Main Street in downtown Oxnard and soon developed relationships with both Mexican officials and Anglo traders from nearby San Francisco Bay Area. Gambling interests also grew during this time as well- resulting in some memorable events that took place around town such as The Races at Willow Glen which featured trotting horses running down long straight streets within clutching hands between riders/owners and their betters - often ending with races being won by fractions of a second or more! A post office was established at oxnard in 1836 under the name of Tomales (later changed to Oxnard). At that time there were only two stores operating in town- both run by Mexicans- so it wasn't until after Californios gained independence from Mexico that business opportunities began flowing into town proper! It wasn't until 1840 when James Pritchard organized a group of farmers who named themselves the Knights of Pythias to improveoads infrastructure including water supplies, roads, schools, firefighting etc... This group helped start what would later become known as Ventura County Agricultural Society which provided assistance throughout rural Ventura County for many years! This period saw some great advances for Oxnard including completion of streetlights (1843), incorporation as an incorporated city (1845), opening of its own jail (1850) & dispensary (1860), establishment of its first library(1868) & grammar school(1872). Today much Parthenon Way still retains its original Italianate architecture dating back to 1871!

Oxnard was founded in 1864 by Captain John Oxnard and his wife, Mary. The town was named after Captain Oxnard's land grant from the State of California. It rapidly grew as a commercial center, with a population of over 2,000 in 1880. The town developed an early cotton industry, with mills producing both textiles and cottonseed oil. In 1924, the Cement Company bought out the local mill operators and closed them down. The town's economy collapsed during the Great Depression; however, it regained some stability in the 1940s through its role as a bedroom community for Los Angeles County. In recent years, Oxnard has experienced significant growth as a bedroom community for Southern California. The median household income in Oxnard increased from $92,500 in 2000 to $127,500 in 2010; it is now one of Southern California's most prosperous communities.
