In 2008, donations totaling $5 million were made towards redevelopment of Downtown Ventura Boulevard which will include high-quality retail space, live music venues and more than 1 million square feet of Class A office space along with educational institutes and other cultural attractions inside and outside the complex

Oxnard has a diverse economy with many businesses and industries based in technology, health care, aerospace, and publishing. Oxnard's history stretches back over 350 years to when the area was part of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. The original mission was built on what is now Mount Hope Cemetery. In 1847, during the Mexican-American War, General José Castro attacked Oxnard and killed 12 soldiers from the U.S. forces under General Winfield Scott at just after sunset while they were eating dinner inside Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. This event became known as "The Battle of Oxnard." In 1868, oxen were brought overland from Southern California by wagonloads of settlers looking for land to farm and ranch in what is today Ventura County. By 1870 there were more than 100 people living in Oxnard; it was not until 1888 that a road called Rancho Santa Fe Viejo (later State Route 101) was completed connecting Oxnard to other parts of Ventura County. The railroad arrived later that decade and soon led to an increase in business and development throughout town including movie theaters (the first being built on Broadway Street), breweries (the first being erected in 1892), hotels (the first being founded in 1896), stores (the first store opened in 1903), schools (founded 1895), churches (founded 1902), restaurants (!—first opened 1934)—and an airport! Today much of this activity remains unchanged although some new buildings have been constructed such as City Hall which replaced an older building dating back to 1915 when the original schoolhouse burned down). One interesting aspect about early American settlement around Ventura County was its focus on wine production rather than agriculture or stock raising which eventually led to significant changes within both the local peasantry and American entrepreneurs alike once vineyards began burgeoning all throughout southern California between 1850-1920s%. It should be noted that wine production did not become widespread until after statehood because then prices for grapes plummeted due to lack of available irrigation water but even so Grapevine Vineyards still dominates acreage produced today with 530 acres producing over 850 cases per year!
