Oxnard, California is a town in Ventura County, California. The population was 24,955 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Santa Monica Peninsula and is adjacent to Simi Valley. Oxnard's name means "place of oxen" in Latin. The first Europeans to explore this area were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his brother Sebastián Cabrillo. They sailed from Mexico City on October 25, 1542 and reached San Pedro Bay on December 7, 1542. They named the bay Santa Cruz de la Laguna because they found a cove there called San Lorenzo Point (now known as Oxnard Pier). In 1874, United States Marines landed at Oxnard Cove to capture Meares brothers who had been raiding American shipping in Mexican waters. The marines burned down two homes near the harbor before withdrawing without further damage or casualties. In 1875, General Santiago Bliss invaded southern California during the Spanish-American War and encountered an American force consisting of around 1,000 Marines under Commodore John Dory at Harbor Village about 12 miles northeast of Oxnard Cove. After a three-hour battle that resulted in no losses for either side but heavy loses for both ships and men ashore, Bliss withdrew with his forces back into Mexico City where he went into hiding. After World War II ended hostilities in 1945, many U2 pilots chartered buses to commute between their base at Gibralter Air Force Base just north of Los Angeles and their final destination: Canoga Park Ranch east of Hollywood Hills one block south of Vine Street – less than two miles across open country from each other on what was then rural agricultural land now filled with high-rise housing developments called "the canyonlands." The drivers would alight behind the buildings next door while someone manning a bus stop handled loading/unloading passengers; once all traffic had stopped for lunch or dinner inside those buildings (and often another stop ran concurrently), passengers boarding buses could cross Vine Street - now part shopping mall - directly to get on board again for homebound trips back toward LAX within minutes after their departure! As commercial air travel became more common throughout America during this time period -- not only did these kinds of terminals become ubiquitous but passenger trains also began running parallel along Vine Street between Union Station (west) and Beverly Hills stations (east), effectively cutting off downtown LA from suburban populated areas!
