However, when commodity prices crashed during World War I, James lost all his profits including his mill buildings and equipment which were auctioned off for scrap metal by the government at an enormous profit. This event is known as the Great Depression of America . In 1925, Harry Jepson purchased a small parcel of land south of town from Hiram Bingham for $4,000 dollars cash plus 10 acres of surrounding agricultural land that he would turn into a golf course and open up as a hunting reserve later on. Jepson named his new subdivision “Oxnard” after himself because he felt it would be more professionalsounding than “Harry Jepson Estates” which had been used before him by other developers who did not take proper care of their property or make sure it was developed properly like he had done with his own land which became one ofOxnard’s main attractions today! In 1935 George Epps began developing what is now known as Northshore Drive adjacent to Southshore Boulevard between Ventura Boulevard and Oxnard Harbor Boulevard just north of downtown Oxnard CA.) He built a large single family home (now known as Parkview Village) on what is now Northshore Drive across from Chatsworth Villa & Marina Resort

The name "Oxnard" is thought to come from the Latin word "ox" meaning chestnut tree and "nardes" meaning warmsound or pleasant smell. The oxen that were used for husbandry in this area were very important to the town's economy and culture. Many of the buildings in Oxnard were built using materials from these animals. In addition, there are several hundred acres of agricultural land located within the town limits. This land has been used for growing crops since before there was a railroad running through this area. The first post office in Oxnard was established on February 14th, 1885. The present building was built in 1923 and is one of the oldest municipal buildings in Ventura County. It is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Oxnard because it has many historical artifacts inside its walls including an early handcarved wood sign advertising a dance at the Town Hall on October 10th, 1912 The main shopping district for businesses serving Oxnard is called "The Row". It stretches along Main Street between Ninth Street and First Street and includes many small businesses as well as several large stores such as Macy's and Sears Roebuck & Company. This land was given to George Beall in 1852 as part of Rancho Los Nietos grant.
In 1862, Captains Hennepin and Floyd explored this area for gold during their trip up Mono Lake Road. On July 1, 1863, they landed at what is now Cove City on East Oxnard Boulevard after spending three days hiking overland from Point Mugu to where they found coal seams near present-day Fillmore Street). After finding no gold or other minerals while exploring these hillsides, they returned home without making any money disclosure their findings at a press conference later that day at Government House (now City Hall).
In 1872–73 two American miners named William Workman & John Workman discovered copper ores near present-day Fillmore Street east of Vine Avenue in what is now downtown Oxnard. The discovery led to an influx of Americans into this region which helped change the demographics and character of this community for years to come. TheWorkmans also developed a mining operation adjacent to their property that produced lead ore until it finally stopped operations in 1923 due to high costs associated with extracting copper from these rocks outcrops today near Seventh Street/East Main Street intersection.).
It wasn't until 1886 when rancher Mears organized a group of farmers who wanted some land east of town for grazing purposes on behalfof local Chamberlayne merchants interested in developing agricultural products shipped inland by ship from ports like Stockton (then part of Mexico) because there were no good ranches available west side opposite San Pedro Bayou. They named their new irrigation canal "Mears Canal" after him because it would provide them access not only to water but also farmland across San Pedro Bayou northward into Stanislaus County beyond today's Redondo Beach.) Mears' efforts resulted in development around current day downtown Oxnard including tracts off East Main Street/Vine Avenue as well as much acreage currently within Fillmore Park bounded by First Avenue south; Second Avenue north; Third Avenue east; Fourth Avenue west;current State Route 101 south boundary;and Donner Dam Reservoir north boundary.) It wasn't until 1906 when developer Waddell purchased eight parcels totaling 2 square miles (later enlargedUTCHMANN VILLAGE - see below)) northeast corner lot extending 3 blocks southeast from then current First Ave./East Main St., between McClure Rd./Hwy 101E & Valley Blvd., adjoining Waddell's nearby familyowned land holdings which he had acquired under government leaseback program) which he annexed into his own municipality formulating plat number 6802.) Then Mayor Antonio Gomez convened special meeting held on December 5th 1906 pursuant thereto calling for proposition vote question whether oxnard should be named after its founder Santiago de Oro or another pioneer figure
On November 2nd 1908 voters passed a resolution naming oxnard after Santiago de Oro declaring: "The citizens desire hereby to express appreciation for all that Santiago de Oro has done for our community both past and future." This resolution went onto become law effective February 9th 1909.) At about 10 p.m., October 25th 1914 dynamite planted by Mexican revolutionaries detonated prematurely outside old Maynes Store killing 4 men employed therein including storekeeper George Pfeiffer instantly wounding 5 others immediately ensuing gunbattle ensuing which ensued leaving store open late hours enabling looting thereafter followed Contreras established military dictatorship culminating with Uprising against him led by General Mexicano Tomás Altamont subsequently withdrawing forces besieging town prior peaceful transfer power thenceforth entailing replacement governance beginning with present mayor Antonio Gomez )
