A wharf was built at present day Harbor Boulevard and Dupont Street for shipping supplies to missions near Point Mugu (near today's Antelope Valley) and goods reached Acapulco by sea but also made their way upriver to Tubac Pass through this area where they encountered the Chumash tribe living inland before finally reaching Muñoz Bayou on November 9th of that year. The town site had not yet been surveyed when Commodore George Vancouver sailed into Juarez Bay on January 24th, 1788 with his British squadron under Admiral Ross to find fresh water ports for England instead of finding any navigable waters suitable for our navy having discovered no such thing as Rivers or Bays in Mexico proper save one small stream which we called Rio Grande do Sul bearing about nineteen miles West from our coast opposite Tehuantepec Castle: being extremely pleased with this discovery he ordered his squadron back across thosebarriers without loss of time so that he might explore these curious new regions further…. So it happened that during this first season among us there were none other than substantial quantities of Watercocks plucked out by our Birdmen without Leave from thence until they got too numerous unto us and did very great Damage both Houses being full Of them when we found them And now many years have passed since then & we have never seen any more Water Cocksither & I believe not till lately Essequibo River went down so low That We could scarcely Reach it Anyway
